YMG Trip

In 2010, some of the ATAC Group had the opportunity to go to the Philippines to do some Charity work. Our team had taken on three main projects. The first was building a livelihood centre in the heart of a “squatter” area in Manila, which will have a particular focus on offering skills to mothers, such as sewing, so they can earn some money for their families.

The second project in Manila has been working with a large number of families who lived as squatters but have recently been relocated to a very basic housing development. Our job there was to make their new situation more liveable. We managed to concrete five large areas there, which benefited about 75 families.

Our next project was in a small rural area of the Philippines, where we began constructing a duplex house for two families who are living as squatters in the local area. The great thing about this project is that the beneficiaries not only get a house that is theirs, but they also get access to medical care, schooling, and livelihood training. The poverty in all areas in which we have been working is quite confronting. Most of the families are living in a house the size of our bedroom.

There is such a great divide financially, between the rich and poor in the Philippines. An unqualified builder works a hard day and earns just over $10 AUD. Although they struggle along, the people in these areas generally have such a joyful spirit, which has been such a blessing for us to witness. Many live so simply, yet seem to be peaceful and content within. Our presence alone has been a gift which has brought them so much joy. However their joy has been amplified by the practical support we have been able to offer. Our team worked incredibly hard, but relishing every day of this life-altering experience. It’s hard not to when you have the privilege to spend time with the Filipino people.
